When it comes to planning a photo session, most people think of outfits, location, or getting everyone to smile at the camera. And while those things matter — they’re not the most important part.

So what’s the biggest mistake I see?

Trying Too Hard to Make It Perfect

Here’s the truth: when you overthink every little detail — the color palette, the matching shoes, the Pinterest poses — you miss out on the magic. You’re so focused on the plan that you forget to be in the moment.

And the moment is what matters most.

What Really Makes a Photo Session Beautiful?

  • Connection — The way your little one leans into your chest, or your partner looks at you when you’re not paying attention.

  • Emotion — The laughter, the quiet cuddles, the honest chaos of parenthood.

  • Comfort — When you feel good in what you’re wearing, you show up more confidently in front of the camera.

  • Trust — Letting go of the pressure and trusting me to guide you makes all the difference.

So, How Do You Actually Prepare?

If you’re in the middle of planning a photo session, here’s what I suggest instead:

  • Choose outfits that feel like you. My client closet is here to take the stress off — flattering, cozy, and photo-ready pieces you’ll feel amazing in.

  • Let go of the idea of “perfect.” The best images come from the in-between moments — not the posed ones.

  • Trust your photographer. (Hey, that’s me.) I’ll guide you, direct you gently, and help your family settle into something that feels real and beautiful.

  • Focus on each other. Breathe. Hold your babies close. Laugh. Let the love lead.

The Best Photos Aren’t Planned to Death — They’re Felt

Your session doesn’t need to look like a Pinterest board. It just needs to look like you. Messy hair, bare feet, muddy boots and all.

So if you’re feeling overwhelmed with planning a photo session, take this as your permission slip to let go. I’ll handle the details. You just bring the love.
