Bringing a new baby into the world is magic — messy, beautiful, emotional magic. That’s exactly what I aim to capture in a newborn lifestyle session: the real, raw, love-soaked moments that unfold naturally in your home. If you’re wondering how to prepare for a newborn lifestyle session, this guide will walk you through everything — from what to wear to what to expect.

1. What to Expect from a Lifestyle Newborn Session

Unlike traditional studio sessions with props and poses, lifestyle newborn photography is all about capturing connection. Think soft snuggles on the couch, baby wrapped up on your chest, siblings peeking over your shoulder, and quiet little in-between moments you’ll want to remember forever.

  • I come to you – No need to leave the house with a newborn. I’ll photograph you in your own space — your bedroom, nursery, or wherever the light feels best.

  • No pressure for perfection – Your home doesn’t need to be spotless. A window with good light, a cozy blanket, and a lot of love is all we need.

  • Baby leads the way – I work around feedings, diaper changes, and sleepy snuggles. We move at your baby’s pace, and that’s exactly how it should be.

2. How to Prepare for a Newborn Lifestyle Session: What to Wear

The goal is timeless, cozy, and natural. Here's what I recommend:

For Baby:

  • A simple neutral onesie, soft wrap, or bare skin with a swaddle

  • No need for shoes, or anything stiff — soft textures work best

For You:

  • Light, neutral tones (creams, soft browns, muted earth tones)

  • Flowy dresses or cozy knits that feel good on your body postpartum

  • Avoid heavy patterns or dark colors — they can distract from the emotion

For the Rest of the Family:

  • Keep everyone in a similar palette (think soft, warm, and cohesive)

  • Avoid logos or clashing colors — the more natural, the better

And yes — my client closet is available! If you're unsure what to wear or nothing in your closet feels quite right, I've got you. My curated collection of flattering, photograph-ready pieces is available for all mamas and little ones. If you’d like to browse beforehand, just let me know and I’ll help you find something that feels like you.

3. Tips to Prepare Your Home for Your Newborn Lifestyle Session

  • Tidy just one or two spaces — Usually we shoot in the nursery, primary bedroom, or living room. Lightly declutter these areas if you’re able.

  • Feed baby just before the session — A full belly = a sleepy, cozy baby.

  • Turn up the heat — Babies love warmth, and it helps them stay settled.

  • Don’t stress! If you’re feeling overwhelmed, I’ve got you. I’ll guide you gently and give space where it’s needed. You’re not “on” — you’re just together.

Your newborn session isn’t about looking perfect. It’s about holding your baby close and remembering exactly how that felt. The softness, the slowness, the way time stood still for just a moment — that’s what we’re capturing.
